What happens when life speeds up?

Do you suffer from IBS? Have you ever noticed it gets worse when life speeds up?

When I first started working in stress and burnout recovery, I wasn’t specifically looking for gut health patterns, but they showed up again and again.

Clients would describe feeling bloated by 10 a.m., needing to rush to the loo before every meeting, or skipping meals altogether because their stomach felt unsettled. Alongside these physical symptoms came deep fatigue, not just physical exhaustion, but emotional depletion too.

Over time, the link became clearer.

For many people, IBS is the body’s way of saying something isn’t regulated. It’s a signal, not just from the gut, but from the nervous system itself, saying that it’s stuck in a state of stress.

IBS isn’t only about food sensitivities or dietary triggers (though those can play a part). It’s also about overload, dysregulation, and unresolved stress patterns that are keeping your body on high alert. When your system is constantly bracing for the next demand, digestion is one of the first things to be affected.

The gut and brain are in constant communication through what’s known as the gut-brain axis. When you’re calm, this connection supports smooth digestion. But when stress takes over, the messages between brain and gut become scrambled, leading to discomfort, urgency, and unpredictability.

That’s why approaches like gut-directed hypnotherapy can be so effective. By calming the mind, we help regulate the body’s stress response. The gut begins to relax, the nervous system finds balance, and symptoms often start to ease naturally.

IBS doesn’t have to rule your day or dictate your routine. Your body isn’t broken, it’s asking for calm, for rest, and for regulation.

When you learn to listen, it’s amazing how much can change.
